Former Assemblyman Jim Marchant is among a wide field of Republican candidates looking to unseat Democratic incumbent Steven Horsford in 2020.

Marchant served a single term as an assemblyman in Summerlin-area District 37 after winning his 2016 bid to replace outgoing Republican Assemblyman Wes Duncan. He then narrowly lost the seat in 2018 to Democrat Shea Backus, losing by a margin of just 135 votes.

Before his time in the Assembly, Marchant had retired to Las Vegas following a career in the internet service provider industry.

Earlier this year, Marchant was placed among the first class of “On the Radar” candidates from the National Republican Campaign Committee’s “Young Guns” program, meant to buoy Republican campaigns in a number of competitive House districts across the country.

Since announcing his bid, Marchant has out-raised his Republican opponents, bringing in more than $108,000 according to campaign finance records. Still, his fundraising has lagged far behind that of Horsford, who raised nearly $800,000 through the second quarter of 2019, including more than $320,000 in individual contributions.

Other candidates vying for the District include Navy veteran and ex-congressional aide Charles Navarro, former Miss Nevada and small-business owner Lisa Song Sutton, Nye County Commissioner Leo Blundo, small-business owner Randi Reed, veteran and small-business owner Sam Peters and small-business owner Rebecca Wood.

One of the few remaining competitive House seats in the country, District 4 has been held by both major parties since its creation in 2011. Even so, Democrats have maintained control of the seat — which includes North Las Vegas and much of the state’s rural center — for all but one election cycle.
