Reno City Manager Sabra Newby will leave her position as the city’s top administrator in July 2020, citing a desire to return to friends and family in Southern Nevada.

Newby, who was appointed by the Reno City Council in March 2017, announced in a letter to city staff and council members that she planned to move back to the Las Vegas area this summer in order to be closer to family and friends. Newby said she plans to stay in the position until July 3rd, and promised to help with the transition in finding a new city manager.

“Serving Reno has been the greatest professional honor of my life. In my time here, I have witnessed the incredible passion and grit that our employees use in their service to this community,” she wrote in the email. “They truly go above and beyond in their service, often in difficult situations with limited resources.”

Prior to becoming city manager, Newby held several positions within Clark County government, including assistant county manager and director of administrative services. Under her initial contract with the city of Reno, Newby received a $200,000 a year salary.

Newby was the first city manager appointed after council members terminated former City Manager Andrew Clinger in 2016, amid a lawsuit and claims of sexual harassment and creation of a hostile work environment. The city settled the lawsuit in September 2019.
