In the race for Nevada secretary of state, former Republican assemblyman and one-time congressional candidate Jim Marchant has cut a national profile as a prominent denier of the legitimacy of the 2020 presidential election and vocal critic of the state’s election administration. 

Though the new complaint was only filed with the secretary of state Wednesday, state officials are expected to close out their investigation into the first complaint filed by Haw by the end of this week.

Down the ballot, far-right Republican candidates largely trounced more moderate (and oftentimes better-funded) primary rivals.

Still, Lombardo — who declared in a debate late last month that “for all practical purposes, this primary is over” — appears well on track to win the primary election next week and proceed to the general election against Gov. Steve Sisolak.

In an environment still defined by the fight over 2020, seven Republicans have crowded the field with bids to replace termed out Republican Secretary of State Barbara Cegavske.

In the attorney general’s race, Tisha Black received slightly more support than Sigal Chattah (18 percent to 15 percent), but the difference between the two was within the poll’s 4.4 percent margin of error.

Nevada’s congressional incumbents led their respective fields in fundraising during the first quarter of a contentious midterm election year, even as several Republican challengers made major strides.

The end of filing means campaign season is officially underway, as candidates — including more than 60 who filed in Clark County on Friday — prepare for the June 14 primary election and Nov. 8 general election.

Haw plans to announce his candidacy next week, and is expected to bring at least half a million of dollars in campaign cash in the bank — more than any other Republican secretary of state candidate reported raising in 2021.

The actual subject of the hearing was AB421, a bill heard by the Assembly Judiciary Committee that would reverse many of the substantive changes Republican lawmakers made in 2015 on lawsuits related to construction defect claims, a move derided by Democrats but lauded by Republicans including Gov. Brian Sandoval and developers as necessary to stem the growing tide of alleged “frivolous” lawsuits on residential construction defects.
