Democratic super PAC attacks Heller on Medicare in new spot
Focus: Republican U.S. Senate candidate and incumbent Sen. Dean Heller
Who’s paying for it: Senate Majority PAC, a Democratic super PAC
Size of buy: Part of an ongoing 7-figure buy
Where’s it running: Statewide
When it starts: Oct. 19
The gist: The ad targets Heller on Medicare, contrasting footage of Heller during a committee meeting where he says “I have not supported, will not support legislation that does weaken Medicare,” with his vote several months later for a budget resolution that Democrats allege would cut nearly $500 billion in Medicare spending.
That $500 billion figure comes from an analysis by Senate Democrats that found in figures released by the Senate Budget Committee a discrepancy in Medicare funding of about $473 billion over the next 10 years. However, the committee has argued that this is not a cut, as Medicare costs — and therefore Medicare spending — will still be increasing over that time frame. Instead, the degree by which Medicare costs increase is projected to be smaller than previous estimates, which they say accounts for the alleged cuts.
The ad ends with several testimonials, including one which says, “when it came to health care, Dean Heller caved to the special interests.”
